Guest curated by Todd Bradway, The Dark Side of the Moon celebrates the everlasting mystery and romance of the night by presenting a selection of nocturnal landscapes and moonscapes created by some of the most celebrated painters working today. Humanity’s fascination with our night sky has existed for thousands of years and continues to inspire the work of contemporary artists today. Innumerable artists throughout history—from Goya to Vincent van Gogh, Caspar David Friedrich, and Georgia O’Keeffe—have created iconic works on the theme of the night and its iconography, most often composed of starlit skies, reflective pools, astrological formations, and dramatic illumination. In particular, the moon and stars occupy a central role in the genre as powerful symbols of illumination and narrative potential. In more recent years, the timeless subject continues to captivate a new generation of painters interested in nature and visual phenomenon, proving time and again its appeal as a subject worthy of deep contemplation. Featuring nocturnal works from an acclaimed group of sixteen international contemporary artists, The Dark Side of the Moon reveals both the vitality and timelessness of the noir image, as well as the continued vitality of painting today.
